Display Hip Hip Hooray!

Our next assignment is to construct a display system for our object, actually multiple objects to be seen by an audience in a free standing display or counter display. We have been reminded to think about how this display is viewed from every angle. This got me thinking. The front of the display might be pretty, but if someone walks up to the display from the back side, or the "wrong side" they will not get the same effect that the person who walked up to the display from the "right side" received. My dilemma is how to solve that problem. I want to incorporate a counter top display because I will be displaying watches, and watches do not necessarily take up an incredible amount a room, unlike a golf club, which would need a free standing display case.

I also decided that 18 display models for this display system would be appropriate in order to represent the 18 holes that are played in a round of golf. I then started looking at photos of golf courses from different perspectives and thought about the 2nd project that I did. Which was an aerial perspective of a golf hole. So, now that I'm doing a display case for multiple watches, why not focus on the aerial view point of an entire golf course? I saw this picture online....

And this picture made me think about using a table top display setting to present 18 watches. And put them in a golf course form set up. By doing this, in effect I am making my own miniature golf course to hold these 18 watches. By doing this, anyone who approaches the display can see that it is a "mini" golf course, and would not be confused. It would in effect force the viewer to walk around the display to see the different golf holes.

My next question is how to actually present the watches on the holes. I believe that by putting the watches on the green, just like I did for my print media ad, the consumer sees that the hole is the target goal of the game, and where you want your ball to be.

Another idea that I had was to put the watches into see through containers such as this one...

By doing this, the viewer can see the watch from any angle, and walk around it to see any side or angle that needs to be seen. But by using a case like this, it doesn't allow the viewer to touch the watch and feel it, which takes away from the experience.

At this point I think starting to make little golf hole models will be a successful starting point in order to display the watches. Possibly using thicker boards to show different levels and tiers of the golf hole will be a smart move in getting started. Going to the supply store is my next mission!

The Enchanted Green of Dreams

The final project to be produced was packaging for our object, mine being the watch. And so I decided to put together a little box that contained the watch as well as a golf ball, which would come along as an added bonus for the customer when purchasing the watch. The box itself was to look like a ball was stuck in the green, which would engage the customer to open the box to see what was inside. That being the watch. The picture of the watch below the golf ball inside of the box can be seen below...

The lid of the box I constructed using chipboard, just like the rest of the entire box. But to make the top of the box more like a green, I used some artificial grass like substance in order to make the top appear more like a green. This picture can be seen below...

Maybe now looking back upon it, there are a few things I could do to improve upon it, and make sure that the box looked more like a green, and so the consumer knew whether or not they were buying a ball or a watch. The overall look came out to look like this...picture seen below...

And a top view can be seen below...

Overall I liked it. I just think now knowing what I know, that the design could be adjusted to make it more appealing to the consumer.

The Pastel Candy Box of Surprises

For our third assigned project, we were told that we needed to package the object given during the beginning of the semester. My object being the bright orange golf watch. And so I decided that maybe packaging it almost like a golf ball of sorts would come off as a creative idea. My preliminary ideas came from a pack of rainbow colored golf balls seen online. But accessing such golf balls could take weeks to actually get, and usually only come in shipments of 500 or more. Which is way more than I actually need for the assignment. I started off with two golf balls surrounding the watch…Picture seen below…

Then I had an idea about making it more triangular and so I set it up like this…Picture seen below…image
And then I played with some geometric designs to place on the front of the box, some of my ideas looked like this…Picture seen below…
image
And then while trying to set the golf balls down on the table without having them move around, I put one of them inside of the watch, and the look that it posed seemed very simple and very sleek. Quite appealing if you ask me. Pictures seen below…

And so my current idea exists as using something circular in design to encase the watch, and keep the golf ball inside of the watch as an extra “gift” when purchasing the product.
Things are always better when packaged together.

Skittles & Sprite & Everything Nice

In the first project assigned, our goal was to make a postcard that represented our particular object chosen. My overall topic was jewelry and I decided to use a golf watch that I own. The color is orange, not a particularly popular color, but the watch itself always seemed to be a nice piece of jewelry to me. My original thought was to enhance the object and focus on the color of the watch, and so I surrounded the watch with orange colored Tic Tacs. Picture seen below…

After reviewing the picture, it almost made the watch blend in, instead of sticking out, which would be the purpose of the postcard if I was to actually advertise it. No one wants a run-of-the-mill watch, everyone wants something original. So I needed to brainstorm. I liked the candy idea, I was hungry at the time, if you had not noticed thus far. And so I contemplated using various colored Mentos. But the arrangement just never seemed to be right to me. Pictures of my attempts can be seen below…

This left me in a rut. What else to do? I looked over and decided that Skittles might be able to solve my problem. Skittles always had a catchy slogan, “Taste the Rainbow” So I decided to incorporate the watch into the slogan in my own scene. If I used every color in the bag besides orange to make the design, it would allow for more focus to be concentrated on the watch, in effect, making it an individual “Skittle” of the rainbow. And since everyone wants something innovative and original, everyone wants the orange colored “Skittle,” well watch actually. Picture seen below…

And that is how I ended up using Skittles with the watch to construct the postcard.
For our second project assignment, a print ad, size 11x17 needed to be constructed. Again with a target market, slogan, anything that would enhance the advertisement to the customer, having it appeal to their eyes as well as their pockets. I decided to draw out a golf course scene. It would focus the viewer’s attention on the golf hole. Since in the game of golf, the end result or goal is to get the ball into the hole. But then I thought why not attempt to make the view almost 3D like. So I rearranged the drawing and decided to stick the viewer in the ground with the hole, allowing them to focus right on the hole, since that is where they want their golf ball to be. Picture seen below…

After reviewing the design, and still not having put the picture of the watch in the scene, it seemed as though this design might just be too plain of an advertisement. It lacked some creative punch. Having used the term 3D so much while trying to explain my project, the thought of making the print ad actually be 3D surfaced. But how on Earth could I turn this into something 3D?
Well, going back to my original design of focusing on the golf hole itself came back into the picture. If I used a bird’s eye view perspective of the golf hole, I could make a water feature, green and hazard, in different layers, to allow for a partial 3D perspective. I found a very nifty paper that had a water look to it, and decided to use that as my base. From there I used styrofoam as the green. I cut it into a curvy shape, since golf green’s are rarely ever perfect circles. Then painted the green a green color to have it be more realistic. Since I didn’t use my actual watch in the display, by taking a picture of it in a grass setting allowed for a more realistic look, since it would be sitting on top of the green. By cutting out a hole in the styrofoam and putting the picture up on a mini stilt, the watch was able to pop out from the hole. Giving the display more dimension and bringing the watch even closer in reach for a potential customer. By adding a small hazard around the hole, it gave some slight color differentiation to the design as a whole as well as an indicator spot for the goal. Picture seen below…
image
I decided that instead of using any of the watch brand’s actual slogans, I’d come up with my own, which would have a unique message for the watch specifically. The slogan that I came up with was “Find the time. Every time.” The message behind this slogan is that every single time you play golf, or tee off, you want to find the hole, that’s the goal, and it is the goal every single time you play a round of golf. By putting the watch as the hole, it appears to the potential customer as the goal, or in an advertising case, a purchase. A close up on the hole can be seen below…
image
And finally with the addition of some glitter glue on top of the photo of the watch, the watch sparkles just a little bit. Just like how the ball or watch would sparkle if it were sitting on top of the green on a nice sunny day, waiting to go into the hole. Picture seen below…

And that is how I was able to create my 3D print ad for the orange colored watch.
Now off to finish those orange Skittles which were not used or harmed in the making of the postcard.

The Midnight Snack Review

After looking through each of the blogs listed, I chose Edgar Cabrera's blog as my favorite. www.edgaracabrera.blogspot.com. I like the artistic creations/designs in Edgar's blog, because they relate to architecture and real life adventures, both being concepts in which I enjoy. The artwork that he draws has a nice calm cartoon like characteristic to it. The subtle use of color also allows certain aspects of the pictures to stand out and shine. His photographs have good lighting and allow you to relate to his travels and experiences. The white background of the blog allows for all of his drawings and photographs to be works of art on their own without a distracting background theme. Edgar's blog stands out to me because it is simple yet filled with multiple examples of incredible design. It allows the blog follower to enjoy the blogger's work for what it really is, no fluff necessary...
...Unless you want it on a sandwich.
